Evidence even suggests that doggos were domesticated thousands of years before our trusty steads. \n\nToday, dogs protect families and property, herd livestock, hunt and retrieve game, work with police, find trapped survivors, sniff out contraband, and even act as health alert systems.\n\nLet’s take a look at the indispensable (and incredible) services that dogs are trained to perform to help people, and other animals, live and thrive.\n\n### Seagull Dogs\n\nSince 2018 seagull-chasing superstars have been protecting restaurants and restaurant patrons in Sydney’s Circular Quay from pesky seagulls. Twelve specially trained border collies and kelpies have been successfully remedying a problem that has plagued diners for decades.  Despite the presence of other birds like _pigeons, seagull dogs are trained to remove seagulls_ only.\n\n### Detection Dogs\n\nDetection dogs are specially trained to protect our borders from biosecurity risks and prohibited or restricted goods. Detector dog teams (dog and handler) complete many months of training before graduating to screen people, products and large areas quickly and without disruption. Substances that sniffer dogs are trained to detect include illegal drugs, wildlife scat, currency, blood and even contraband electronics.\n\n### Police Dogs\n\nPolice Dogs are an integral part of policing duties, with many breeds trained to assist law enforcement officers in various ways. Police Dogs search for drugs and explosives, locate missing people, find crime scene evidence, protect officers and the public, and apprehend suspects who flee from officers. Zoe, a white German shepherd, was one of Australia's first police-trained dogs, and was the first dog in the world to respond to commands via radio signal.\n\n### Conservation Dogs\n\nBecause they can smell what we can’t see, dogs are used in conservation to track and help rescue rare animals such as koalas, quolls and masked owls, and detect pest species, and locate threatened native plants. Hedonism is where there is the general presence of good things but the absence of bad things (i.e. pleasure but not pain); and 2. Eudaimonism is essentially living a life that has purpose and meaning. To break this down a bit more, eudaimonism includes things such as self-acceptance, positive relations with others, personal growth and a sense of purpose.\n\n#### But how can owning a dog help with these?\n\nA British study found that owning a dog can help us in lots of ways. In terms of hedonistic happiness, people reported that owning a dog increased happiness full stop. Because dogs are so often playful, joyful and seem to possess that zen-like ability to just BE in the moment… and because they frequently do silly things that make us laugh, they make us happy. Pretty simple really.\n\nBeyond that, from a eudemonic happiness point of view, dogs' unwavering loyalty and non-judgmental devotion to us help nurture our feelings of self-acceptance. And because (come rain, hail or shine) dogs want to get outside and go walking, their owners have to get outside and go walking too.
