Benefits of Rice Bran in Dairy Rations
CopRice is a division of Ricegrowers Ltd (trading as SunRice).
As the only processors of rice in Australia, CopRice has exclusive access to all by products of the rice milling process including highly nutritious Rice Bran (also known as Rice Pollard).
CopRice strategically utilise this Rice Bran along with other key ingredients (Wheat, Barley etc) to create balanced, palatable and highly digestible pellets.
Rice Bran is the result of processing natural brown rice into white rice for human consumption. Rice Bran is the 8-10% outer layer of the brown rice grain and therefore contains the majority of the vitamins, minerals, protein, fat and fibre present and is therefore a highly nutritious ingredient to add to pelleted feeds. On the other hand Rice Hulls are the outer covering of the rice and are obtained following the de-hulling process of paddy rice. Rice Hulls contain a high level of fibre and have limited feed value; hence it is primarily used as livestock bedding material.
Rice Bran has long been regarded as having many nutritional benefits to livestock and domesticated animals. Rice Bran is rich in oil (fat) at up to 26%, hence is considered to be a good source of energy. Rice Bran also contains a considerable amount of protein (up to 15%). The amino acid profile of Rice Bran is well balanced and compares favourably with other cereal bran. Besides offering quality energy and protein, Rice Bran is an excellent source of vitamins B and E and the high levels of other vitamins and anti-oxidants stimulate good health and results in better animal condition.
Research has proven that feeding additional energy in the form of fat increased the concentration of cholesterol, fat and progesterone in the blood thereby exerting a stimulatory effect on ovarian structures of ruminants as well as increasing the size of ovulating follicles. Strategic feeding of such a high fat, energy rich ingredient reduces the cow’s negative energy status so that she returns to estrus earlier after calving and therefore conceives sooner.
CopRice use Rice Bran in our dairy pellets strategically, in combination with other high quality feed ingredients to create a balanced, nutritious and highly digestible pellet. These scientifically formulated pellets will help your cows to reach their maximum production potential, improve cow fertility and health.
Rice Bran is:
- An excellent source of highly digestible and sustained form of Metabolisable Energy with no undesirable acidosis effect in rumen environment.
- Rich in essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants.
- High in digestible protein, vitamin E, B-vitamins (Thiamin and Niacin) and trace minerals (Manganese and Zinc).
The important features and benefits of Rice Bran are listed in the following table.
|Highly digestible feed.||Improved feed efficiency which equates to better feed conversion, increased milk production, improved fertility and cow health.|
|Safe energy source.||Very limited risk of acidosis allowing you to increase feeding rates when necessary (early lactation).|
|High energy content.||Increases cows energy intake resulting in an improved energy status. Reduces the impact of negative energy balance in early lactation.|
|Rich in essential fatty acids and Gamma Oryzanol.||Essential fatty acids have an important role in improving herd fertility. Gamma Oryzanol is an antioxidant which promotes cow health.|
|Moderate levels of protein.||The protein in Rice Bran contains a good balance of essential amino acids. The quality of protein in Rice Bran is generally better than that of cereal grains.|
|Excellent source of Vitamins E & B (B1 and Niacin).||Vitamin E, a fat soluble vitamin, helps build the immune system especially prior to calving. Vitamin B1 is important for energy metabolism. Niacin reduces the incidence of metabolic diseases.|
|Rich source of Manganese and Zinc trace minerals.||Manganese is essential in reproduction, building the immune system, and bone development and strength. Zinc promotes hoof and udder health.|
