Billabong High success at Royal Melbourne Show

Billabong High School from Culcairn once again achieved outstanding results at the recent Royal Melbourne Show.

The school exhibited 7 of their own South Suffolk sheep and 8 steers that they had purchased and prepared for the Carcase Competition (which has “Hoof” and “Hook” sections).

The sheep won many prizes in individual classes and went on the win the CHAMPION SOUTH SUFFOLK EWE and RESERVE CHAMPION RAM. The team also won the Group of 3 Sheep (1 ram and 2 ewes) and the Sires Progeny Group, which includes 3 offspring of a single ram.

The cattle, sourced from within a 30km radius of the school, also performed well and took out placings in the heats. A steer from Margaret Pierce of “Belanglo Park” at Gerogery eventually went on the take out the HEAVY WEIGHT LED STEER OR HEIFER. This animal was then judged against the Medium Weight and Export Weight Champions. He was subsequently selected as THE GRAND CHAMPION LED ANIMAL of the show out of 186 exhibits.

Following the live judging the animals were processed and the carcases were judged. Two of our steers came 6th and 7th in the heavy weight division.

Both our sheep and cattle are fed, and prepared for shows, using pellets from CopRice at Leeton. We greatly appreciate the support and sponsorship provided by CopRice as their generosity allows us to keep this program running at our school. We look forward to continuing our success in the future.
