CopRice Lamb Finisher

CopRice Lamb Finisher Pellets are a highly digestible steam pelleted ration formulated with the optimum balance of energy and protein sources for finishing lambs on limited pasture.

CopRice Lamb Finisher Pellets provides ample nutrients for rapid growth and maximum lean meat yield and contains approved buffers to minimise the risk of digestive upsets and contribute to improved growth rate and feed conversion efficiency, when fed according to recommended guidelines.

CopRice Lamb Finisher Pellets include added essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Salt and ammonium chloride have also been added to minimise the risk of urinary calculi, which can be a problem with male lambs fed supplements.

Feed levels should be built up to around 300 to 500 grams of pellets a day for a 35kg lamb. In extreme cases, farmers may feed up to 800 grams per day. Growth rates of around 200 grams per day can be expected in lambs fed a balanced diet.

Finishing lambs the right way

Feeding management is critical when supplementary feeding lambs. Attention to detail and access to a continuous supply of good quality feed and cool, clean water is essential for maximising feed intake, minimising digestive upsets and optimising production efficiency.

CopRice Lamb Finisher Pellets have been designed for feeding lambs from as early as weaning, but a starting weight of at least 30 kg is preferred.

New feedstuffs such as CopRice Lamb Finisher Pellets should always be introduced gradually over a period of at least two weeks to allow the rumen to adapt and minimise the risk of digestive upsets.

Initially it is best to supply pellets at 100 g/head on the ground, with a few older ewes in the mob to teach the lambs what to do. If ewes and lambs are fed together before weaning, the lambs should have no problems with eating pellets.

Gradually increase level of pellet feeding by 30-40 g/head/day on the ground over a period of about two weeks to 400-500 g/head/day before allowing lambs to access pellets in feeders with straw or hay to appetite.

Dry roughage will still be required if lambs are grazing on limited lush pasture in addition to pellets.

Good first cross lambs can eat up to 1.0 - 1.3 kg/head/day of pellets and 300-500 g/head/day of hay or straw in a pasture situation, and grow up to 300 g/head/day.

All lambs should be wormed and vaccinated to prevent clostridial diseases such as Pulpy Kidney. They should also be shorn prior to starting an accelerated finishing
program.

Weather conditions will play a significant part in the performance of lambs on feed. If the weather is particularly wet with cold, squally wind, increasing the roughage allowance will help to keep animals feeding and aid in the prevention of digestive upsets.

During the adaptation period, and throughout the finishing period, it is essential to closely monitor all lambs to prevent any health problems.
